Java J's Cafe recognized as 2021 Emerging Business of the Year at 76th Annual Meeting & Dinner
On Thursday, March 25th, 2021, the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce celebrated another year in the books at the 76th Annual Meeting and Dinner, a Starlit Soiree, at the John F. Rhodes Civic Center in Bay Minette. Chamber staff and board, North Baldwin business owners, local officials and members of the community gathered to enjoy an evening full of networking, boxed charcuterie dinner and drinks, award presentations and so much more!
The North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Emerging Business of the Year award is presented to a business who has been open 3 years or less and has already demonstrated a commitment to customers, community and continuous growth. As soon as the nomination form went live this year, the chamber saw an overwhelming response for Java J's Cafe, as they received over half of the total nominations across the board.
Some may have called them crazy as they opened their doors last year in the middle of the pandemic… but they hit the ground running, dripping with possibility and enthusiasm, overcame many challenges and have not stopped since. They have a clear strategy for achieving success, have a strong management team, have ambition to be progressive and innovative, are committed to our community, and most of all have a demonstrated commitment to their customers. This business has managed to adapt and maneuver through very uncertain times, all while maintaining a positive reputation, relaxing atmosphere, and friendly customer service.
“There is nothing like Java J’s in our community” according to one of the nominations. This charming coffee shop provides a large area with free wifi for students to hang out and study, a small area for children, multiple meeting and training spaces, plus the actual coffee shop stocked with various baked goods, grab-n-go items, daily specials, coffees, tea, ice cream, boba and even gifts! Owner Lynn Smith, and staff have opened their doors for several fundraisers, donated tips to benefit local causes and sponsored two events with Starla Chapman to raise funds for children’s cancer research. Java J’s has also allowed multiple small groups to meet at their location at no charge, including grief groups, a blessing to so many in our community struggling with loss or other difficulties. Just recently, Lynn has also partnered with a Licensed Professional Counselor who will provide Yoga classes to anyone interested, as well. This business has been one of the first to step up when a local need arises and it has not gone unnoticed.
Opening a small business is difficult, especially food & beverage, but Lynn followed her dream anyway, even with owning another local business, Kinder-Kastle, and also working as a full-time nurse with Pathway... that’s dedication and worth recognition in itself. Java J’s owner and staff have been very welcoming and accommodating of the North Baldwin Chamber on multiple occasions for use of space when the office internet was down, or for events like our recent new member breakfast.
We applaud Java J’s for their creativity in coming up with new drinks and specials, their engagement on social media, their long list of loyal customers and compassion for Bay Minette and the North Baldwin community. Java J’s has remained vigilant and hopeful through an unprecedented year to grow tremendously in such a short amount of time and we’re proud to present them with this award.
